CASE STUDY

Using secondary and primary research explore two game/quiz shows of your own choice

The first game show that is historic that I chose was “The price is right” and the contemporary one I chose was “The cube”.

Bruce price is right is a British game show, showing from 1995-2001. It was actually based on the US version of the same name “The price is right” (1972-2007). It was first aired on ITV. The show is about contestants that compete against each other for prizes by trying to guess the correct prices of consumer goods.

The host is of the show was Bruce Forsyth and the producers were Jim Brown and Howard Hunt ridge. The format of this show is from the classic US “Price is right” because it has the same name. Also France has their own version too called “Le Juste Prix”. The set is quite big and spacious because it has prizes around and activities to do in order to win the final prize. The audience is spread across the room into two parts and the presenter is facing towards them. I think the demographics of this show are towards all races that British and, the age i think is for 25 and over, because there are a lot of elderly people in the audience.

Bruce price is right starts off with a classy intro, full of cartoons and mini videos of past contestants playing in the game. There is a background voice explaining about the game show and he says the title of it. Then its a different shot and the camera goes to Bruce coming out of the opening doors and posing for the camera. That just shows Bruce personality, we all know hes a chilled laid back guy so that can make the audience more comfortable and have more fun. The background music is soft, slow and light hearted so that makes the show look more relaxed. The audience is very happy and cheerful when Bruce is talking to them or telling a joke to them, also when Bruce calls a contestant down, that's when they cheer more.

In terms of Richard Dyer theory he is right for transparency for this show. Its very easy to understands what this show is about and its straightforward. Audience like to see what the contestants will get from playing a game show, so in this show you win prizes from what activity you completed. The host "Bruce Forsynth" creates a sense of community with everyone because he is very friendly with the contestant and he involves everyone in the audience, this can involve people watching it at home. There is a lot of good energy in the show because its so light hearted and fun, and that can attract people to watch it. The intensity of this show is kind of soft because it only gets intense when they get to the last question.

The cube is a British game show from 2009-present and was first aired on ITV. The show is about testing the contestant’s ability, nerve and determination to win. The Cube is still present today on the T.V and they continue to challenge members of the public to attempt deceivingly simple tasks in a giant cube. Once inside, there is nowhere to hide, as their entire journey is captured from all angles by over 90 slow motion and game freeze cameras. If they complete a series of challenges, they get a chance to win up to £250,000.

The host of the show is Phillip Schofield and the producers are Adam Adler, Andrew Newman, Nathan Eastwood, Andrew O’Connor and Annabel Raftery. The format has been successful with international broadcasters, as of 2015 eleven countries have produced their own versions of the show. The set looks like it’s in a miniature arena, with the audience on three sides looking down slightly on proceedings. I think the demographics of this show are towards all races that are British and, the age I think is for 15 and over.

The cube starts with the presenter standing with a contestant and then it goes on to a different shot of other contestants competing. While this is happening there is a man speaking in the background explaining what happens when you play the cube. It also shows the audience reactions and their expressions. The presenter also shows some facial expressions and he also says a memorable quote such as “what do you have, what it takes to beat the cube”. This can be effective because it’s kind of like a question to try and challenge you and they would want a response from you. When the presenter says that the camera zooms out from him and it’s a long shot. You can see the audience behind him and on both sides clapping and cheering. The music is fast and upbeat which can create tension because that is what the cube is about, they want the audience to feel like they are playing

the game when they are watching the contestants.

In terms of Richard Dyer theory the transparency of this show is fairly easy to understand as there is a lot going on. The abundance of this show is that you can have knowledge, so you can learn something from the contestants when they are playing. I don't think this show creates a sense of community because everyone is all after the money or prize and this has a more intense and serious atmosphere. The energy is good in this show because the audience are shouting and trying to help the contestant when they are playing in the cube. There is a lot of intensity in this show as this is more of a serious game and when people play in the cube you can see the audience reaction and they look intense.

Comparing the both shows
In comparison of both game shows they are both similar but very different in a way. In terms of technology, both shows have changed dramatically over the years. Bruce price is right show, the camera is not that H.D or crisp it has this foggy looking style. The sound is also not that great,it just sounds like a typical old T.V show. It's also quiet when Bruce is talking, there's no back-round music.
Also you just hear the audience cheering and clapping in the distance like an echo. The cube show technology has improved so much,The quality is more H.D looking and it's clear and crisp. The sound is clearer in this show to hear because you can hear every detail in the back-round.The set in the Bruce price is right has very bright colors to it and has a lot of flashing lights around. It's also very colorful and that sets the mood of the whole show that its light hearted, fun and bubbly. Compare to the cube, the set is dark and gloomy. It has red flashing lights and the mood for this show is more serious and intense. Its like this because they want the audience to feel tension and to be jumping of their seats. The hosts are different in both game shows, Bruce Forsyth is relaxed with his audience and hes dancing around and telling jokes. He wants to bring positive chilled energy to everyone. The host in the cube is more serious and more professional because they want the audience to know that is a serious game.
